A trailer for the documentary SIDE BY SIDE just surfaced, which highlights the revolution of digital film and its effects on the industry, particularly the big name (and little name) filmmakers who have embraced it.
Directed by Chris Kenneally, with interviews conducted by Keanu Reeves (who is also a producer) the doc features a bevy of cutting edge filmmakers, including James Cameron, Martin Scorsese, David Lynch, Robert Rodriguez, George Lucas, Stephen Soderbergh, Christopher Nolan, and more.
With 35mm slowly choking to death like Jabba with a chain around his neck, it begs the question if it’s really that much of a shock. Seeing as most forms of traditional technology are evolving into the digital realm, with a number of filmmakers being able to capture the same or better look of 35mm, the debate seems to hinge on traditionalists vs. innovators.
Either way you look at it, those in the filmmaking community have a lot to say about the issue, as they should. What I personally love about digital is that it allows aspiring filmmakers the opportunity (i.e. equipment) to hone their skills and edge their way into the marketplace. It’s a tough racket as it is.
